MERS Initiative
The Mortgage Electronic Registration System, or MERS®, is a database that houses information on countless numbers of vacant properties throughout the country. MERS® was developed as municipalities began enacting their own individual vacant property registration ordinances. These ordinances require owners of properties that have become vacant or abandoned for a certain length of time to register formally with the local government.
Through this system, code enforcement officers are able to obtain critical information for a property that may be in danger of violation of local city codes. The system lists the title holder, servicer, and property preservation company, as well as all applicable contact information for the aforementioned interested parties. The officer can then reach the contact person for the property and address any issue before a citation needs to be issued.
On behalf of our clients, Safeguard can automatically register properties on MERS®, thus streamlining the process and ensuring that Safeguard’s contact information is available to anyone who may need it, in the event of an emergency situation in the future.
