Louisiana Road Home Program Update

Recent media reports continue to discuss delays in the grant process.

New Orleans City Business states that as of 2/21:

  • The Road Home program has closed 749 homeowner grants out of 109,053 applications as of Tuesday leaving the program far short of the 2,300 closings promised as of one week from today.
  • The Road Home reports 75,536 appointments have been scheduled or held.
  • Benefits have been calculated for 43,421 applicants for a total of $3.49 billion.
  • The average benefit calculated is $81,505.
  • The program awards grants of up to $150,000 apiece, minus insurance proceeds, to qualified homeowners affected by hurricanes Katrina or Rita.
  • Under the program, applicants have three options: rebuild, relocate or sell. So far, 14,545 have chosen to rebuild, 2,309 to relocate and 453 to sell.

A report in the Times-Picayune discusses that some of delays are due to indecision on the part of the grant recepients. Issues causing the indecision include the real estate market and insurance coverage/premiums.

Mayor Ray Nagin testified before a congressional subcommittee and requested that the City be allowed to administer the Road Home Program for its residents.
