During a recent meeting Thomas J. Moyer, the chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court has requested that lawyers should offer their services without charge to help courts, homeowners and lenders deal with the increasing number of foreclosure cases filling Ohio court dockets. Lawyers urged to lend a handOhio's top jurist is calling on lawyers to do their part to help address the rising number of home foreclosures throughout the state. Thomas J. Moyer, the chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, said lawyers should offer their services without charge to help courts, homeowners and lenders deal with the increasing number of foreclosure cases filling Ohio court dockets. “This is more than a legal issue; this is a social issue,” Moyer told lawyers at a meeting on the issue Dec. 20. “People’s lives are being seriously affected, and the legal community must respond with action.” Moyer noted that lawyers are required to perform some public-interest work free of charge, and the foreclosure crisis presents an opportunity for them to help. Foreclosure filings are expected to increase more than 40 percent in Ohio this year compared to four years ago, the Supreme Court said, citing statistics kept by lower courts.
