Northumberland police to target 'nuisance' properties

The borough police department, at the request of the Borough Council, will begin focusing on properties that are in violation of the borough's nuisance property ordinance.

On May 4, the department will begin addressing those properties found to be in violation of the ordinance. Examples of violations include accumulated garbage, junk and rubbish or abandoned or junk vehicles that are stored in areas besides designated, public dumping grounds.

The enforcement effort will entail a systematic approach. The effort will start in the 1st Ward. Thirty days later, violations observed on properties in the 2nd Ward will be addressed. And in 60 days, violations in the 3rd Ward will be addressed.

The 1st Ward is the area running north and south proceeding west toward the North Branch of the Susquehanna River from Second Street. The 2nd Ward is the area between Second and Fifth streets. The 3rd Ward is the area from Fifth Street to the borough line along Eighth Street.

Generally, officials said, a nuisance is any condition or practice causing or capable of causing an unreasonable threat to the public health, safety and welfare.

Residents who have questions about the ordinance or believe it may take them longer than 30 days to bring their property into compliance, or residents who do not have the financial resources to perform a cleanup, are asked by officials to call the borough office at 473-3414.
