St. Bernard Parish Demolitions
Wednesday, 07 June 2006

A recent report discusses the efforts of the Christian Contractors Association, a private not-for-profit organization that is accepting applications for demolitions.

80 Sign Up for Free Demolition From Christian Group
About 80 homeowners register for free demolition by Christian Contractors Association during Parish Council meeting; group has 2,100 owners signed up and Parish Council urging them to go forward.

The St. Bernard Parish Council on Tuesday urged the private Christian Contractors Association to move forward on the 2,100 requests from parish residents for free demolition of storm-damaged homes and their foundations.

Robert McKee, coordinator of the nonprofit Christian group, signed up 80 homeowners during the Council meeting and said he now has 2,100 signed up and several thousand more inquiries from people who must still get their proof of ownership to sign up.

The group, which started taking down storm-damaged homes on May 18, has done more than 30. Applications are still available at the Parish Information Center, a trailer office behind the parish government building. The Christian group hasn’t set a deadline.
The number at the group’s national office is 1-800-278-7703.

But the deadline for signing up for the parish program, in which the Federal Emergency Management Agency reimburses the parish its cost to URG, is this Friday, June 9. The parish program doesn’t remove the slab because FEMA won’t reimburse that cost. About 2,900 have signed up for demolition of homes under the parish’s program.

Several Council members told McKee to move forward. Council member Judy Hoffmeister said she was exasperated by the pace of the recovery and said she was worried that “sooner or later (the Christian group) will run out of time and patience’’ with the problems in St. Bernard.

Council member Mark Madary praised the group for cutting through government regulations to do something privately.
