New Orleans Repair Deadline Update
Wednesday, 14 June 2006

As previously discussed, (click here) the New Orleans City Council passed an ordinance establishing Aug. 29, 2006, as a deadline to repair and secure damaged properties.

The ordinance has now been amended.

The new ordinance extends the deadline for dwelling repair and remediation, which was originally supposed to occur no later than Aug. 29, 2006.  The new ordinance gives the owner of a dwelling “no later than one year after the city serves notice on the owners of the dwelling or dwelling unit of the owners’ duty under this Article to take such measures.”

The new ordinance also automatically deems dwellings in the Lower Ninth Ward (70117) to be hardship cases.  Thus, those properties are automatically eligible for possible exceptions to any deadlines.
