City Council/Mayor Agree to Target Red-Tagged Homes

Some say they're ugly, others say they attract rodents and they are even known to deter would-be home buyers.

Carol Wood, Lansing City Council: "If it sits in the neighborhood and people see a tag or boarded windows, it makes a difference if people want to buy it or not."

The list of red-tagged homes in Lansing neighborhoods is endless, and it seems like no community is immune. Just ask Nickie Folley who lives right next door to one.

Nickie Foley, Lansing resident: "It's close to my heart because there has been one next door."

Residents in the community say the red-tagged home has been left to fester for three years, but residents hope this new initiative will bring tagged homes up to code quicker. The new plan, approved by council and introduced by Mayor Virg Bernero earlier this year, will put five code officers solely in charge of decreasing the names on the list.

Nickie Foley: "I'm encouraged by it. I hope this initiative helps red-tagged home owners move in the right direction."

And city leaders hope it will, too. The red tag task force could start work as early as this fall.
