A recent report discusses the passing of Ordinance 06-34 addressing dilapidated or condemned properties.

Owners Of Dilapidated Houses Face Heavy Inspections
Owners of buildings in Colorado Springs deemed "condemned" or "dilapidated" will soon have to make some serious changes.

Back in April, city council passed an ordinance to replace the old code which stated properties needed only to be secure, with maintained exteriors. Now, it is against the law to to own or occupy a dilapidated building.

Since then, the Code Enforcement Office has identified the owners of the 105 houses considered "dilapidated" and will soon be sending notices to them, warning of the enforcement set to start in the fall. Ken Lewis, a Code Enforcement Administrator says, "Once the house is identified as a dilapidated property, we ask them for either a rehabilitation plan or a demolition plan, and they have 70 days to comply."

Owners who do not fix up their properties will be charged $500 each quarter for a new inspection.
