Memo #5012 - PDA System for Inspections (11/16/03)
Please be advised that Safeguard Properties Inc. will require that all inspectors be up and running with a PDA system by mid year 2004. We understand that this may be a cost that you are hesitant to incur at this time, but the advantages to using a PDA system far outweigh the costs. INSPI was designed to accommodate a PDA, and our inspectors should take advantage of it. A PDA will allow you to accomplish much more than just entering your inspection results onto the handheld, and there are many PDAs available in many different price ranges, with a variety of different capabilities. Safeguards system is compatible with Sony, Handspring, and Palm.
The following is a list of benefits to using a PDA system.
- Your PDA can be used as a planner and as a phone book, and many models have digital camera capabilities.
- With a PDA, there is no typing or manual entering of results into the computer. Results that are entered to the handheld can be hot-synched or transferred to your desktop or laptop with the press of a button.
- If your PDA has digital camera capabilities, the photos also can be transferred to your computer system at the press of a button.
- As you no longer have to manually enter or type results, the PDA is a huge time saver. There is no need to be up until 3 oclock in the morning entering results into the system, and the use of a PDA may even reduce the risk of carpal tunnel or other typing-related injuries.
With the movement toward a wireless environment, and with PDAs on the market today having wireless capabilities, there is no telling how soon an inspector will be able to update and receive work while on the road, saving you from having to go back to the office to enter work or see what new orders came through for the day.
These are just a few of the advantages to owning a PDA system. With technology moving forward as fast as it is, Safeguard Properties Inc. wants to stay with the times and move in the same direction. We feel that our subcontractors could also grow in the same direction with the simple purchase of PDA.
